Energy Bills Discount Scheme

The Government have this week announced a new scheme for business energy support, which will run from 1 April 2023 to 31 March 2024 in Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

The Energy Bills Discount Scheme will provide businesses with a unit discount of up to £6.97/MWh unit to their gas bill and a unit discount of up to £19.61MWh to their electricity bill, above a threshold level of £107/MWh for gas and £302/MWh of electricity.

This is a lower discount than the previous scheme, so businesses are likely to see a lower level of discount from April.  With the wholsale reference price threshold having increased, many businesses qualifying for the Energy Bills Relief Scheme that is currently in operation will not qualify for the new scheme.

A higher level of support is being offered to energy intensive businesses, primarily manufacturers; the list of sectors is here.

Richard Powell, Director of Flexible Space Association Member Enexus Energy commented: “As the level of discount has been reduced so substantially, it is more important than ever to ensure that your energy contract is as cost efficient as possible and that flexible workspaces are as energy efficient as possible.

“Energy prices have fallen substantially since their peaks in Q3 & Q4 2022, so there are some excellent prices available now for any contract to start within the next 18 months.  In addition, energy saving technologies such as LED lighting and Solar Panels are providing extremely quick payback periods so are a better investment than ever.”
